Housing Support in Ward 8
Everyone in Ward 8 deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. Whether you’re a tenant or homeowner, there are resources available to protect your rights and help you address housing challenges. Here’s how you can get support.
Fair Rent Commission
The Fair Rent Commission helps tenants address issues like unfair rent increases or unsafe living conditions. If you’re struggling with housing, this is a great first step.
- What They Do: Investigate complaints about rent and housing conditions.
- How to Get Help:
- Visit the Fair Rent Commission website
- Call (203) 946-8390 to file a complaint.
- Who Can File: Any tenant in New Haven experiencing unfair treatment.
Tenants Unions
A tenants union is a group of renters working together to demand fair treatment from landlords. Organizing can help you advocate for better conditions, repairs, and fair rent.
- Why Join or Start a Tenants Union?
- Collective power to negotiate with landlords.
- Access to legal support and resources.
- A stronger voice for housing justice.
- Get Help Starting One: Reach out to the CT Tenants Union or New Haven Legal Assistance.
Know Your Rights: Connecticut Tenant Laws
As a tenant in Connecticut, you have legal protections to ensure your housing is safe and fair.
- Security Deposits: Landlords can’t charge more than two months’ rent (or one month if you’re 62+). Deposits must be returned within 30 days after you move out.
- Repairs: Landlords are required to keep your home safe and habitable. If repairs aren’t made, you may be able to withhold rent.
- Evictions: Landlords must follow legal eviction processes, including notice and court proceedings.
